I am back

On Saturday evening, Pope Benedict celebrated vespers at San Gregorio al Celio. Soon we'll learn that the Pope was compelled to do it, on the occasion of visit of Rowan Williams, Archbishop of Canterbury. Some people simply know that the Pope wouldn't do such a thing of his own will: he wouldn't meet with a schizmatic. He must've been compelled, there can't be another explanation. I often admire those who know – so well! – what the Pope thinks, what he would and what he wouldn't do. They seem to know him better than he knows himself. And – what's worse – they see him as a weak man who can't do what he wants or what he thinks he should (or shouldn't) do. He's simply made by others to do things he neither likes nor wants. Poor Benedict.

However, there are also some people who realize that they can't know what the Pope thinks or what he wants to do, yet they think that celebrating verspers with Rowan Williams was a loathsome act. Soon we'll hear their scolding cries: How could he do that?! Why did he do that?!

W sobotni wieczór papież odprawił nieszpory w kościele San Gregorio al Celio. Niebawem usłyszymy, że został do tego zmuszony, a to z powodu wizyty arcybiskupa Canterbury, Rowana Williamsa. Niektórzy po prostu wiedzą, że papież nie zrobiły takiej rzeczy z własnej woli, nie chciałby spotkania ze schizmatykiem. Musieli go zmusić, nie da się inaczej wyjaśnić. Często podziwiam tych, którzy tak dobrze wiedzą, co papież myśli, co chciałby zrobić, a czego nie zrobiłby. Zdaje się, że znają go lepiej niż on sam. A co gorsza, widzą w nim słabego człowieka, który nie może robić tego, co chce, albo tego, co, jak sądzi, powinien (lub nie) zrobić. Inni zmuszają go do robienia tego, czego on sam nie lubi i nie chce. Biedny Benedykt.

Ale są i tacy, którzy są świadomi faktu, iż nie wiedzą, co papież myśli albo co chce zrobić, niemniej jednak są przekonani, że nieszpory z Rowanem Williamsem to coś okropnego. Wkrótce usłyszymy ich pełne oburzenia lamenty: Jak on mógł to zrobić?! Dlaczego on to zrobił?!
