Jeruzalem, Jeruzalem...

Przeczytałem opis liturgii świętego Triduum we Wspólnotach Jerozolimskich i... jestem zdumiony. Kilkoma przynajmniej rzeczami.

Wielki Czwartek – umywanie rąk (sic!). Chodzi o to, aby nie myć nóg dwunastu wybranym mężczyznom, ale aby obmyć wszystkich. W Ewangelii jednak Jezus wyraźnie mówi, że apostołowie są czyści, a wykąpani potrzebują tylko nogi umyć – nie ręce, nie głowę, jak domagał się Piotr (J 13:9-10). Poza tym, gest umywania rąk w Ewangelii o męce Pańskiej ma zupełnie inne znaczenie...

Wielki Piątek – jutrznia recytowana, chociaż przez cały rok śpiewana. A przecież jutrznia Wielkiego Piątku, jak i Wielkiej Soboty, to bardzo uroczyste oficja, jedyne śpiewane oficja w ciągu tych dni, cała reszta jest recytowana półgłosem.

Wielka Sobota – jutrzni nie ma. Jest w południe liturgia Zstąpienia do Otchłani. Temat mi bliski, nie wiem jednak, jak owa liturgia wygląda, z jakiej tradycji pochodzi, z czego się składa. Opuszczenie jutrzni jest dziwne, wszak Wielka Sobota to dzień, w którym tylko liturgię godzin się sprawuje.

This morning I read about Easter Triduum liturgy as celebrated in Monastic Fraternities of Jerusalem. I am, well... surprised. A bit.

Maundy Thursday – washing of hands (sic!). Since it's impossible to wash feet of more than twelve men, they decided to wash hands of all present in the church. But Jesus was clear about this: he said that his apostles were clean, and those who have taken a bath need only to have their feet washed, not hands or head (cf. John 13:9-10). Besides, washing one's hands has totally different meaning in the story of Christ's passion...

Good Friday – Morning Prayer is recited, not sung, as through the year. Odd, since Morning Prayer (connected with the Office of Readings) of Good Friday and Holy Saturday are solemn offices, the only sung offices on those days, all other prayers of the breviary are recited with low voice.

Holy Saturday – no Morning Prayer. At noon they have a liturgy of the Descent into Hell. I have no idea of what tradition is that liturgy, what parts it has. However, no Morning Prayer is really odd: Holy Saturday is a unique day, with only the Divine Office celebrated, no other liturgical action.
