Qui omnia mundi elementa
fecisti, et vices disposuisti temporum variari; hominem vero formasti
ad imaginem tuam (…) ut vicario munere dominaretur omnibus quae
creasti. (5. praefatio de dominicis 'per annum')
One of the English
translations of this text is: All things are of your making, all
times and seasons obey your laws, but you chose to create man in your
own image (…) You made man the steward of creation. I prefer that
translation to the new one: For you laid the foundations of the world
and have arranged the changing of times and seasons; you formed man
in your own image (…) to rule in your name over all you have made.
Man as the steward of
creation. Vicario munere dominatur, he rules as the steward, not as
the king, for there is only one King.
In Gondor the Stewards
never became kings, even after ages of kings' absence.
