A Midsummer Night's Meditation

Qui omnia mundi elementa fecisti, et vices disposuisti temporum variari; hominem vero formasti ad imaginem tuam (…) ut vicario munere dominaretur omnibus quae creasti. (5. praefatio de dominicis 'per annum')

One of the English translations of this text is: All things are of your making, all times and seasons obey your laws, but you chose to create man in your own image (…) You made man the steward of creation. I prefer that translation to the new one: For you laid the foundations of the world and have arranged the changing of times and seasons; you formed man in your own image (…) to rule in your name over all you have made.

Man as the steward of creation. Vicario munere dominatur, he rules as the steward, not as the king, for there is only one King.

In Gondor the Stewards never became kings, even after ages of kings' absence.
