When the priests of pride say, There is no other way...

... I tilled the sorrows of stone. (Loreena McKennitt)

In that dark world where gods have lost their way. (Theodore Roethke)

Every Night and every Morn
Some to Misery are born.
Every Morn and every Night
Some are born to Sweet Delight,
Some are born to Sweet Delight,
Some are born to Endless Night. (William Blake)

I forgive things
I shouldn't.
I wait longer
Than I should. (...)
But when I leave,
I don't come back. (Michael Poetryy)

Doworst

Czytam wiersz Tolkiena pod takim właśnie tytułem, parodię egzaminów oksfordzkich w latach trzydziestych minionego wieku. Biedni studenci, mylący fakty i czasy, gramatykę i dzieje Anglii.

The Mirror

Starring in the empty mirror
She pondered on days
When knights went
Through and through it
It was only an image
Not reality
Now she hasn't got either
Of them

Moje rozważania do Wielkich Antyfon można gdzieś w internecie znaleźć, wystarczy wpisać w Google. Bo ja teraz zbyt dużo nie napiszę. Źle się dzieje.

Nieznany wiersz Tolkiena

Ocean

Gods boundlesse mercy is (to sinful man)
Like to the ever-wealthy Ocean:
Which though it sends forth thousand streams, 'tis ne're
Known, or els seen to be the emptier:
And though it takes all in, 'tis yet no more
Full, and fild-full, then when full-filled before. (Robert Herrick)

Feria sexta in passione Domini, seu in Parasceve

Lully, lulley, lully, lulley,
The fawcon hath born my mak away.

He bare him up, he bare him down,
He bare him into an orchard brown.

In that orchard there was an hall,
That was hanged with purpill and pall.

And in that hall ther was a bed:
It was hanged with gold so red.

And in that bed there lythe a knight,
His woundes bleding day and night.

By that bedes side there kneleth a may,
And she wepeth both night and day.

And by that bedes side ther standeth a ston,
‘Corpus Christi’ wreten theron.

Fragment 15-wiecznego, makaronicznego wiersza, w oryginalnej pisowni:

Thre kinges come on goid twelfth day,
stella mycante previa;
To seche that childe they tok the way,
portantes sibi munera.

A sterne forth ladde theis kinges all,
inquirentes Dominum;
Lying in an asse stall
invenerunt puerum.

For he was King of kinges heghe,
rex primus aurum optulit;
And also Lorde and King full right,
secundus rex thus protulit.

For he was God, Mon and King,
myrra mortem retulit:
He us all to Heven bring,
qui mortem Cruce voluit.

Thy Son shall shine

I have a sin of fear, that when I have spun
         My last thread, I shall perish on the shore;
But swear by thyself, that at my death thy Son
         Shall shine as he shines now, and heretofore;
                And, having done that, thou hast done;
                        I fear no more.
(John Donne)

W Serca Twego ranie

Dziś uroczystość Serca Jezusowego, radosna i bolesna.

By miłość Twoja mogła mocno
Tak przeszyć serce moje,
Jak w Twoje Serce wbita włócznia,
Gdy śmierć poniosłeś za mnie.
(anonim angielski, 14. wiek)

But in her web she still delights
To weave the mirror's magic sights,
For often thro' the silent nights
A funeral, with plumes and lights
        And music, went to Camelot:
Or when the moon was overhead,
Came two young lovers lately wed:
“I am half sick of shadows,” said
        The Lady of Shalott.

Czytajmy Johna Donne'a

Holy Sonnets, I

Thou hast made me, And shall thy worke decay?
Repaire me now, for now mine end doth haste,
I runne to death, and death meets me as fast,
And all my pleasures are like yesterday;
I dare not move my dimme eyes any way,
Despaire behind, and death before doth cast
Such terrour, and my feeble flesh doth waste
By sinne in it, which it t’wards hell doth weigh;
Onely thou art above, and when towards thee
By thy leave I can looke, I rise againe;
But our old subtle foe so tempteth me,
That not one houre my selfe I can sustaine;
Thy Grace may wing me to prevent his art,
And thou like Adamant draw mine iron heart.

Creator Spiritus
The wind that scatters dying leaves
    And whirls them from the autumn tree
Is grateful to the ship that cleaves
    With stately prow the scurrying sea.

Heedless about the world we play
    Like children in a garden close:
A postern bars the outward way
    And what’s beyond it no man knows:

For careless days, a life at will,
    A little laughter, and some tears,
These are sufficiency to fill
    The early, vain, untroubled years,

Till at the last the wind upheaves
    His unimagined strength, and we
Are scattered far, like autumn leaves,
    Or proudly sail, like ships at sea.

        *     *     *
Wind over the Sea (fragment)
    Only a grey sea, and a long grey shore,
    And the grey heavens brooding over them.
    Twilight of hopes and purposes forgot,
    Twilight of ceaseless eld, and when was youth?
    Is it not lonely here, beyond the years?

Aha, i dlaczego wszyscy tam noszą okulary przeciwsłoneczne?

Sonet na dziś

Śnił mi się mój ojciec...

John Donne, z Sonetów świętych

Death, be not proud, though some have called thee
Mighty and dreadful, for thou art not so;
For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow
Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be,
Much pleasure; then from thee much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee do go,
Rest of their bones, and soul's delivery.
Thou art slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,
And poppy or charms can make us sleep as well
And better than thy stroke; why swell'st thou then?
One short sleep past, we wake eternally
And death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.
